What is the difference between a 32/64 bit operating system and a motherboard?
Is a 32/64 bit operating system a type of motherboard or is a motherboard something different? Please tell me and explain. I’ve been confused because I’ve been told you need better motherboards for more RAM, but then been told you need a 64 bit for 4GB+?
The numbers “64 bit” and 32 bit represent how much data your CPU can handle at one time. 64 Bit processors are relatively new, and are a quite a bit faster in the right environment. To operate them at the speed they are intended, you need an Operating System that can handle it, hence, 64 Bit Operating systems.
The RAM limit is due to how memory is allocated in a 32 bit system. You are essentially limited to 3gb of RAM on any 32 bit system (although some recognize more than that, it can easily be lost to other hardware parts on the system, so 3gb is the practical limit).
If you want to run a system with more than 3gb of ram, you need it to be a 64 bit processor, with hardware that is compatible at 64 bits, and an operating system to run it all.
So really, 64 bit is a little of everything, if you want to actually run it. You cannot simply install a 64 bit processor on a motherboard and be running a 64 bit system. Same with a 64 bit operating system, it needs the processor. And both need hardware with compatible drivers.
You can see how it gets pretty easy to get confused.
